Research lines
- Anatomo-functional organization of visual and somatosensory cortical areas, with special emphasis on interhemispheric connections : comparative aspects, postnatal development and plasticity.
- Morphological alterations of neurons and vessels in important cerebral diseases, such as epilepsy or neurodegeneration (Alzheimer´s disease, vascular dementia, Parinson´s disease).

Experimental approaches
In addition to classical experimental models, the Brazilian biodiversity offers several ideal models for the study of cortical organization using anatomical and electrophysiological methods.

For the study of cortical networks, functional mapping is first performed in vivo through microelectrode recordings of single neurons activity. Specific locations of cortical sensory maps are selected, and their connections are labeled with anterograde or retrograde tracers (biocytin, biotinylated or fluorescent dextran amines, carbocyanines,...). Projection patterns, circuits, or individual neurons are then reconstructed from serial sections with the help of a computer-coupled microscope (Neurolucida, Microbrightfield). The detailed three-dimensional geometrical features of individual neurons, including their entire dendritic and axonal arbors, can then be used for computer-simulation of action potential propagation.

For the investigation of structure/function relationships in cerebral diseases, we use either animal models (intracerebral stereotaxic injections of dugs, peptides and proteins with different polymerization and/or conformational states), or human tissue removed during surgery (intractable temporal lobe epilepsy) or from post-mortem samples (Alzheimer, vascular dementia,...).
We also work on developing new methodologies for the visualization and analysis of transient connections and of cerebral microvascular networks.
